How Bowen therapy changed James Taylor’s life

Having always led an active lifestyle, James suffered a serious jaw injury in his twenties. While searching for a solution, he discovered Bowen Therapy, a holistic treatment that played a key role in his recovery. Inspired by the results he experienced firsthand, James went on to train as a Bowen therapist himself. Today, he helps others improve their health and well-being through a holistic approach to healing here in the Algarve.

Can you tell us a little about your background and where you’re originally from?

I’m James, originally from Bournemouth in the UK. My background is rooted in sports, particularly surfing, which I’ve been doing for more than 20 years. Through sport, I developed a fascination with the human body and how it works. Alongside Bowen Therapy, I owned and operated a small surf school in the UK. In October 2024, I made the move to Portugal to focus fully on life as a Bowen therapist.

What were some key experiences in your early life that shaped who you are today?

The beach played a huge role. My friends and family were beach-obsessed, which led to a very active outdoor lifestyle. My involvement in sport sparked a strong interest in the body and how it functions. That combination of outdoor living and curiosity about physical wellbeing eventually led me to practise Bowen Therapy in Portugal.

Were there any personal health challenges or turning points that inspired your career in holistic therapy?

I struggled with a chronic jaw issue that caused me significant problems throughout my twenties. During my recovery, Bowen Therapy became a central part of my treatment plan. After experiencing its benefits firsthand, I decided to fully commit to and study to become a Bowen therapist myself.

How did you first discover Bowen Therapy and holistic wellness?

My chronic jaw injury led me to Bowen Therapy. The treatment played a major role in helping resolve my issues, and that’s how I was first introduced to it.

What drew you specifically to Bowen Therapy compared to other modalities?

I responded incredibly well to the treatments I received. Seeing such positive results motivated me to learn the technique and help others in the same way it had helped me.

How long did it take you to train and become qualified?

I completed a Bowen Technique Diploma over the course of one year. After that, I spent another year in a traineeship with my mentor, Celine Valentin, and have continued my professional development through additional courses. I am currently studying biomechanics and exercise science through the Chek Institute.

What do you think sets Bowen Therapy apart from more mainstream treatments?

Bowen Therapy is unique because it incorporates frequent pauses, allowing the nervous system time to respond. Rather than mechanically correcting one specific area, it aims to encourage a whole-body rebalance and treats the body as an interconnected system, even when pain is localised.

What type of clients benefit most from your approach?

A wide range of people benefit, from athletes recovering from injuries to those dealing with everyday aches and pains, chronic conditions, pregnancy-related discomfort, and older adults seeking better mobility and wellbeing.

What is the most rewarding part of being a wellness practitioner?

Helping people feel better and supporting them in resolving pain is incredibly rewarding. Knowing you’ve had a positive impact on someone’s health and quality of life makes the work worthwhile.

How did the transition from the UK to Portugal influence your work and lifestyle?

I love spending as much time as possible outdoors and in nature, so Portugal was a natural fit. Whenever I have spare time, you’ll usually find me in the surf catching a few waves.

Can you describe the services you currently offer in Lagos and the wider Algarve?

I offer consultations and Bowen Therapy treatments. Initial appointments begin with a detailed discussion about your concerns, health history, and lifestyle. This is followed by a full-body assessment and a tailored Bowen treatment designed to support the body’s natural healing processes and help restore balance. Clients also receive personalised recommendations and practical strategies to help maintain the benefits of treatment.

Do you offer mobile treatments, home visits, or only clinic-based sessions?

I offer both clinic-based and mobile treatments.

What is the typical experience for someone coming in for their first session?

The first session begins with a conversation about your health history, symptoms, and treatment goals. This helps me build a complete picture of what’s happening in your body. I then carry out a gentle physical assessment before delivering the Bowen treatment in a calm and relaxing environment, allowing your body time to respond to the technique.

How do you tailor your approach to each client?

Every treatment is tailored to the individual. I carefully listen to each client’s concerns, assess what’s happening in their body, and adapt the session to support their specific needs. No two clients present in exactly the same way.

What conditions or concerns do people most commonly seek your help for?

Many clients come to me with acute or chronic injuries, back and neck pain, sports injuries, mobility restrictions, nerve-related discomfort such as sciatica, and stress-related conditions.

How would you describe your overall approach to health and healing?

My approach is holistic. Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, I look at how different systems within the body interact and work together. The aim is to address root causes and support long-term change and wellbeing.

What role do you believe relaxation and nervous system balance play in physical well-being?

They play a fundamental role. For the body to heal and repair effectively, it needs time in a parasympathetic, or “rest and digest”, state. Supporting the nervous system in reaching that state is a cornerstone of my approach.

How do you explain Bowen Therapy to someone who has never heard of it?

Bowen Therapy uses gentle, precise movements to calm the nervous system and support the body’s natural ability to rebalance and heal. It’s non-invasive, deeply restorative, and suitable for people of all ages.

Do you encourage clients to make lifestyle changes alongside therapy?

Absolutely. Where appropriate, I offer practical advice and recommendations to support long-term health and enhance the benefits of treatment.

Do you have a favourite spot in the Algarve?

The West Coast.
