AI Market Confusion Is Delaying Pega’s Deals, Not Killing Them
Pegasystems (PEGA) had a rough second quarter, and the stock’s slide toward the lower half of its 52-week range reflects genuine investor concern. Revenue rose 9% year over year to $421 million, but adjusted EPS fell 56% to $0.35, missing the $0.43 consensus estimate. Shares sank roughly 19% following the report.
Total ACV growth slowed to just 7% reported, well below what management expected heading into the year. Executives point to confusion in the software market driven by AI. Enterprises are rethinking how software should get built, priced, and operated as AI pricing models shift toward usage-based token pricing, so many buyers paused rather than committed.
There’s a silver lining buried in the numbers. Pega Cloud ACV still grew 22% year over year, and Pega Cloud now represents 57% of total ACV. Free cash flow reached a record $288 million in the first half of 2026, showing the underlying business remains cash generative even as new bookings slowed.
Founder and CEO Alan Trefler didn’t sugarcoat the moment but struck a steady tone. “This cost uncertainty is leading many organizations to sort of freeze and try to figure out what’s going on and take a more deliberate approach to technology investments,” Trefler said. He added, “We have a really good understanding of how to react strongly but smartly.”

Is PEGA Stock Cheap Enough After the Selloff?
Under valuation model assumptions realized through 12/31/28, the stock is modeled using:
Revenue Growth (CAGR): 8.6%
Operating Margins: 27.2%
Exit P/E Multiple: 13.1x
Based on these inputs, the model estimates a target price of $39. That implies 15.1% total upside from the current share price and a 6.2% annualized return over the next 2.3 years.
A 6.2% annualized return puts Pegasystems just above the threshold for moderately attractive, and that feels appropriate given how much uncertainty sits in the current stock price. Revenue growth of 8.6% roughly matches Pegasystems’ historical pace, so the model isn’t assuming a dramatic reacceleration.
Operating margins of 27.2% represent a solid improvement from the 21.7% margin posted over the trailing year. This reflects the ongoing shift toward higher-margin Pega Cloud subscription revenue and away from lower-margin maintenance and consulting. Subscription services revenue grew 17% year over year even as consulting revenue contracted 13%.
The 13.1x exit multiple sits well below Pegasystems’ current NTM P/E near 13x, so the model isn’t paying up for a rebound story. If anything, the multiple looks conservative given the company’s improving cloud mix and record first-half free cash flow.
Compared to larger workflow automation peers, Pegasystems trades at a meaningful discount, largely because of this quarter’s growth scare. Whether that discount closes depends on whether the ACV slowdown proves temporary, as management insists.

Pegasystems vs. Salesforce and ServiceNow in Workflow Automation
Pegasystems competes in workflow and customer engagement automation against much larger rivals in Salesforce (CRM) and ServiceNow (NOW). The size gap explains a lot of the valuation difference. Salesforce trades at a forward P/E near 24x, nearly double Pegasystems’ 13.1x multiple, but Salesforce’s revenue growth also slowed to roughly 9%.
ServiceNow commands a much steeper premium, trading above 50x forward earnings. Its revenue growth runs closer to 20% annually, and its subscription model scaled more smoothly through the current AI transition than Pegasystems’ has this year. That gap highlights exactly what spooked investors about Pega’s quarter.
Pegasystems’ differentiator is its architecture. Trefler has argued that competitors relying on run-time large language model reasoning face risky and expensive cost structures, while Pega Infinity applies AI agents at design time to control token usage more predictably. It’s a sound argument, but this quarter’s results suggest clients still struggle to digest that distinction.
Where Pegasystems holds an edge over both larger rivals is capital efficiency. Its free cash flow of $288 million in the first half of 2026 reflects a leaner cost structure than either Salesforce or ServiceNow typically runs.
What’s Driving PEGA Stock Going Forward?
The next earnings report lands in late October. Investors will watch closely for signs that delayed deals from the first half are finally closing. Management said movement is happening, though CFO Ken Stillwell cautioned that the third quarter is typically difficult for this kind of turnaround.
The $700 million free cash flow target by 2028 remains a key long-term anchor. Trefler and Stillwell both emphasized a commitment to maintaining Rule of 40 performance rather than chasing growth at any cost, so investors should expect continued discipline even if bookings stay soft.
Product execution is also worth tracking. Pega Infinity 26 and its design time AI agent approach represent the company’s core answer to the token pricing confusion roiling the software market. Recent partnerships, including one with Gryphon for contact compliance governance, show Pegasystems continuing to expand its AI governance capabilities.
Finally, the resolution of shareholder derivative litigation removes a legal distraction heading into the back half of the year. Because that overhang cleared and the appeal period expired, management can focus fully on closing deals already moving through the pipeline.
