As our son grows up, he becomes interested in all kinds of activities that are not always available in the Algarve, or only occasionally. That is one of the reasons why we have found ourselves spending several weekends in Lisbon this spring.
We have always enjoyed visiting the capital, but these recent trips allowed us to discover even more family-friendly places and experiences. Since many families from the Algarve also enjoy weekend breaks in Lisbon, I thought I would share some of our favourite finds.
Parque das Nações
I first became familiar with Parque das Nações a few years ago when my husband had work commitments in the area. Our son was just a baby at the time, so while my husband was working, I spent hours exploring the neighbourhood with a stroller. Since then, Parque das Nações has become one of our regular stops whenever we visit Lisbon.
One place we always return to is Capricciosa, a family-friendly restaurant serving pizzas and pasta, popular with local families thanks to its indoor play area. The staff are very attentive to children and usually bring colouring books and pencils to the table, which is always appreciated when dining out with a young child. The children’s menu also offers plenty of choices.
Just nearby, families can enjoy a ride on the cable car, which offers fantastic views over the Tagus River. Floating around 30 metres above the ground, the journey runs between the Vasco da Gama Tower and the Lisbon Oceanarium, providing a unique perspective of the waterfront.
Outside Parque das Nações, another favourite family dining spot is Time Out Market. With a variety of restaurants and food concepts gathered under one roof, it is ideal for families or groups who cannot agree on what to eat. It is also a great place to sample several Portuguese specialities in one visit. As an added bonus, there is a playground directly outside, which younger visitors will certainly appreciate.
Cultural activities for families
While searching for family activities, we also discovered Espaço Boutique da Cultura, a non-profit cultural association whose projects focus on community engagement and empowerment. The venue hosts a variety of cultural events throughout the year, many of them aimed at children and families.
What we loved most about this small theatre is its constantly changing programme. Every few weeks, new productions are introduced, giving local families the opportunity to return regularly and enjoy something different each time. We have already attended two performances there, including The Princess and the Frog, and both were wonderfully adapted for young audiences. The shows are interactive, engaging and, importantly for parents, not too long. Children can even sit on cushions close to the stage, making the experience even more immersive. It is worth arriving early to secure the best seats.
The cultural programme extends beyond theatre and includes exhibitions, musical performances and community gatherings, making it a wonderful place for both adults and children.
Oceanário de Lisboa and Pavilion of Knowledge
Of course, many families visiting Lisbon head straight to the Oceanário de Lisboa or the Pavilion of Knowledge (Pavilhão do Conhecimento). Between the two, I personally prefer the Pavilion of Knowledge because of its highly interactive exhibits.
Before our first visit, I was not sure whether it would be suitable for a four-year-old, but it absolutely was. We were fortunate to visit the exhibition Supercreatures! Powered by Nature, which runs until September. Through 27 interactive stations, children can discover some of Portugal’s most fascinating animals and their unique abilities. Our son is fascinated by wolves, so he especially enjoyed the wolf-themed area, where visitors can hide behind a wall and try howling like a real wolf. This exhibition allows children to learn while having fun and encourages them to see the world from different perspectives.
The Oceanário offers a calmer but equally fascinating experience. Families can also purchase a combined ticket that includes both Oceanário entry and a cable car ride. Alongside the impressive permanent exhibition, One Planet, One Ocean, there are temporary exhibitions that change throughout the year.
For younger visitors, there are also special events such as baby concerts and children’s fado performances, making the visit even more memorable.
During one of our walks through the city, we unexpectedly came across Hygge, a stylish café I had previously seen on social media. It quickly became one of our favourite stops. The café is very family-friendly and serves pancakes in a variety of sizes and flavours, making it a hit with children and adults alike.
Lisbon’s iconic viewpoints
One of the best ways to spend an evening in Lisbon is by watching the sunset from one of the city’s many miradouros. Each viewpoint offers a different perspective, but one that holds a special place in my heart is Miradouro da Senhora do Monte.
I first wanted to visit this viewpoint while I was pregnant. Located just above the more famous Miradouro da Graça, it offers some of the most beautiful panoramic views of Lisbon.
Inside the nearby chapel is a chair that was once believed to ease the pain of childbirth for pregnant women who sat on it. Although that tradition is no longer possible, many still believe that good fortune follows women who visit this peaceful and historic place.
Where to stay
In the past, we preferred staying in small boutique hotels right in the historic centre, enjoying the atmosphere and being able to walk everywhere. These days, when travelling with our son, we often choose larger hotels with swimming pools, which are usually located outside the city centre.
Hotels in Cascais are also a great option for families, as many offer children’s activities, spacious pool areas and easy access to the beach. Cascais itself is charming and feels very different from Lisbon, despite being only a short distance away. There are always new cafés, shops and hidden corners waiting to be discovered.
Lisbon never disappoints. Whether you are travelling alone, as a couple or with children, the city offers an endless variety of experiences, activities and places to discover. Every visit brings something new, which is why we always look forward to returning.
