We spoke with founders Elke Groos and her daughter-in-law Öznur Stucken, about how Leodoro came to life, their current collections, life in the Algarve, and much more.
When people hear the name Leodoro, many immediately think of cashmere. While cashmere remains at the heart of the brand, the boutique offers much more. Silk, viscose, modal, and silk-cashmere blends feature throughout the collections, offering the same sense of quality and comfort while being perfectly suited to the warmer months.
How would you describe the brand to someone discovering it for the first time?
Leodoro stands for timelessly elegant luxury fashion, defined by a strong personal touch and curated collections for every season. But we are much more than just a retail brand; our boutique in Almancil is a welcoming space where we want our customers to feel right at home. We offer a highly personalised shopping experience that is a deliberate, warm alternative to the streamlined, anonymous high-street shops.
What first inspired you to enter the world of fashion?
Elke Groos (E.G.): My journey into fashion was shaped by a lifetime of beautiful environments. I was fortunate to live in cities where I was constantly exposed to a rich tapestry of styles and trends. This vast exposure ignited my passion for innovation.
My love for fashion is lifelong, and it’s a passion I beautifully shared with my late husband.
So, while fashion was always a deep personal passion of mine, turning it into a profession was never part of my initial plan.
That spark was truly ignited when I moved to Portugal. I realised how much I missed those welcoming, beautifully curated boutiques where you just love to linger and discover unique pieces. Seeing this gap in the local market, the idea to create something of our own began to grow. Together with my daughter-in-law, who brings incredible expertise to the table, we decided to channel our shared love for timeless style into creating our own collection of premium garments.
Öznur Stucken (Ö.S.): Natural fibres have been a passion of mine since long before I began my professional career in the international textile industry. Later, working for a leading luxury brand in Türkiye allowed me to build precious, direct relationships with some of the world’s best Cashmere experts, which is a massive advantage for Leodoro today.
Beyond cashmere, what are the key elements that define the Leodoro style and philosophy?
In addition to impeccable fabric quality and sophisticated design, our absolute priority is fit and versatility. The brand was partly born out of a shared frustration among friends who love beautiful fashion but were tired of the disappointment when a stunning piece simply doesn’t fit well, irrespective of body shape. Our philosophy is to create and select fashion that flatters, feels effortless, and can easily be mixed and matched to create endless new, stylish combinations.
How has the brand evolved since its beginnings in the Algarve?
We opened our boutique in Almancil in October 2025, a time of year when the Algarve evenings start to get quite chilly. Naturally, our premium Cashmere collection was our first focus. Since then, we have evolved beautifully through many enlightening conversations with our customers. This invaluable feedback has allowed us to perfectly calibrate our newer collections, finding the ultimate sweet spot between our personal creative vision and the actual desires of the local community.
The Algarve enjoys a unique climate throughout the year. How does that influence the collections you create?
The Algarve climate demands adaptability. We experience gorgeous, hot summer days, as well as cooler coastal evenings and transitional months that require smart layering. Because of this, our collections are designed to move effortlessly between temperatures. We focus on lightweight breathability for the daytime, while always ensuring we have sophisticated, cosy layers ready for when the Atlantic breeze rolls in after sunset.
What fabrics and materials do you focus on during the warmer months?
During the warmer months, the focus shifts entirely to weightlessness and skin comfort. In addition to our incredibly popular modal-based pieces, like our signature polo shirts, we feature clothes made with pure silk, silk-cashmere blends, silk-viscose and modal. These materials feel wonderfully light and cooling on the skin, even during the hottest summer days.
How do your spring and summer collections differ from your autumn and winter offerings?
The core difference lies in the material composition and weight. While our autumn and winter collections highlight the cosy, protective luxury of pure Cashmere, our spring and summer line introduces a range of high-quality fabrics, including silk, a silk-viscose blend, and a silk-cashmere blend. They all maintain our signature Leodoro luxury feel and offer alternatives to the hotter temperatures.
Is it fair to say that Leodoro caters to an Algarve lifestyle rather than a specific season?
Yes, absolutely. We definitely see ourselves as an active part of the Algarve and the vibrant community surrounding us, not just as a fashion boutique that happens to be based in Almancil. Our location is not a happy accident; we truly love being, working, and living here. Our fashion reflects this exact lifestyle: sophisticated yet relaxed, cosmopolitan yet deeply connected to the effortless beauty of Southern Portugal.
What pieces from the current collection best represent the versatility of the brand?
E.G.: That’s a difficult question because we select everything with versatility in mind! But I believe our pure silk and silk-viscose tops are perfect examples. They effortlessly elevate whatever kind of skirt or trousers you pair them with, taking you from a casual afternoon to a formal evening.
Ö.S.: I completely agree! I absolutely love them because they bridge the gap between casual comfort and high elegance so seamlessly.
How does living and working in the Algarve inspire your designs and collection choices?
The inspiration is everywhere. Stunning coastlines, the golden beaches, the rugged rocks, and the olive and fruit trees. The natural palette and the sheer kindness of the people here fill one’s heart with joy. Furthermore, the Golden Triangle attracts individuals with a truly great cosmopolitan flair. Our inspiration is fueled by this local beauty, which we then mix with international trends we discover during our scouting trips to fashion capitals like Milan or Paris.
What are your customers looking for today when it comes to dressing for life in the Algarve?
It depends entirely on the individual’s specific lifestyle, which is wonderfully diverse here. A customer who spends their days on the world-class golf courses of the Golden Triangle seeks a different level of functional elegance than someone needing a striking outfit for an upscale dinner reception, or someone simply looking for a beautiful, thoughtful gift. They all, however, share a demand for premium quality and comfort.
Do you find that residents and international visitors have different fashion preferences, or are there common trends across both groups?
We’ve found that the unique taste of an individual customer, along with their specific life history, usually beats any generalisations about cultural backgrounds. Because a large portion of Algarve residents moved here from all over the world, it creates a beautifully diverse, inspiring mix of influences. The common trend across everyone is a desire for effortless chic that mirrors the region’s beauty.
Leodoro is known for its boutique atmosphere. What kind of experience do you aim to create for customers when they visit?
We intentionally steer clear of a clinical, transactional “point of sale” environment. The vibe we are aiming for is that of your absolute favourite café. We want every customer to step into a relaxed, warm atmosphere where they can browse, try on outfits at their own pace, enjoy a friendly conversation, and share a great cup of coffee with us.
How important is personal styling and customer service to the Leodoro approach?
It is the very foundation of what we do. We want to provide a uniquely personal shopping experience where you feel inspired, empowered, and completely at ease. If you find a piece you love and buy it, perfect. If you prefer to just soak up inspiration, chat, and spend time petting our Australian Cobberdog Leo, that is just as wonderful. For us, it’s all about nurturing long-term relationships built on trust and well-being.
What exciting trends, collections, or new arrivals can customers look forward to this year?
Ö.S.: When we curated and designed our current summer collection, our main goal was balance. We wanted our customers to have access to pieces that keep them perfectly comfortable in the intense Algarve heat, while remaining incredibly chic, whether they are lounging in the daytime or attending a fancy evening reception.
If there’s one misconception about Leodoro that you’d like to change, what would it be?
That we are only a cashmere brand for colder weather. While custom-designed, premium cashmere is our heritage and pride, we also offer a spectacular, enchanting range of lightweight luxury options specifically designed for spring and summer.
Many people still think of Leodoro primarily as a cashmere specialist. What would you like them to know about the wider range of collections and styles available throughout the year?
We want them to know that our commitment to luxury fibres doesn’t stop when the temperature rises. Our summer variations of silk, modal, and premium viscose offer the exact same level of sophistication, tailored fit, and comfort as our winter cashmere. Leodoro is a year-round fashion destination.
Personal Journey & Life in the Algarve
What do you love most about living and working in the Algarve?
The unparalleled quality of life, the light, and the inspiring community. Living here allows you to balance hard work with moments of pure peace, surrounded by nature and an international, open-minded crowd of people who truly appreciate the finer, slower moments in life.
How has the Algarve lifestyle influenced not only your collections but also your approach to business?
It has taught us to bring a sense of relaxed mindfulness into our business structure. Just as life here slows down to appreciate the sunset, we want our retail experience to slow down. We don’t rush our customers. Life inspires us to create fashion that is luxurious but never stiff or restrictive.
If you had to describe Leodoro in three words, what would they be?
Timeless. Elegant. Chic.
Is there a particular piece or collection that holds special meaning for you personally?
Our initial Cashmere launch collection will always hold a unique place in our hearts because it marked the physical beginning of our dream in Almancil. However, seeing our silk-viscose line come to life and watching our customers fall in love with it for the summer has been equally rewarding.
What fashion item can you never be without?
Ö.S.: During the summer, it absolutely has to be our viscose-silk trousers. They are the epitome of what we stand for: incredibly stylish, moving beautifully with the breeze, and exceptionally comfortable.
Running a business together can be challenging. What do you think makes your partnership work so well?
Our partnership thrives on a beautiful balance of generations, mutual respect, and completely complementary skill sets. We share the exact same core values and vision for the brand, which allows us to navigate challenges smoothly while maintaining a warm, family-driven business culture.
What strengths does each of you bring to Leodoro?
Ö.S.: My mother-in-law has an incredibly deep understanding and sharp vision of what truly constitutes a premium brand. She possesses a natural talent for authentic networking and has an immaculate eye for detail.
E.G.: And Öznur brings invaluable, deep-rooted expertise from the international textile and luxury fashion industry. Her structural knowledge of fabrics and production, and her direct relationships with elite producers, allow Leodoro to offer such unparalleled quality.
What is a typical day like for you when you’re not helping customers in the boutique?
Ö.S.: The non-glamorous but vital side of running a boutique fashion business. It involves managing logistics, coordinating with our premium suppliers, curating upcoming seasonal lines, accounting, and ensuring that everything behind the scenes runs as flawlessly as the experience out on the boutique floor.
What ambitions do you still have for Leodoro?
E.G.: We are, of course, just at the beginning of our journey as a local business. It would be wonderful if more and more people grew to see Leodoro as their personal, trusted shopping home away from home. Our ambition is to make our boutique a timeless staple of the Golden Triangle, a welcoming place to find beautiful things, where a visit is always worth your time.
You can find Leodoro on the Avenida José Santos Farias 135 in Almancil, close by the Jardim das Comunidades and next to Arcadia Luxury Villas. Open Wednesday to Saturday from 11am until 6pm. For more information, follow their Instagram account @leodoro_fashion.
