What Happened?

Seagate Technology (STX) closed at $847.20 on August 27, and the debate around it has quietly shifted. For most of this year, investors argued about whether the AI-storage boom was real. Management has now answered that with contracts: pricing is locked for all of calendar 2027, and the vast majority of nearline capacity is already allocated into calendar 2028. The question worth asking at this price is no longer whether the next year holds. It is what the demand looks like on the far side of the order book, in 2029 and 2030, because that is the stretch the current valuation is really leaning on.

Wall Street’s average target of $1,125 sits about a third above the current price, and the stock is off the roughly $1,093 all-time closing high it set in June. Bears say a hard-drive maker at more than 60 times trailing earnings has already priced in the good news. The bull case depends on something more specific than momentum: a demand runway that keeps extending as fast as Seagate can book it.

The Runway Now Reaches Past the Contracts

On the July earnings call, CEO Dave Mosley framed the change directly. Existing agreements already cover pricing and configuration through calendar 2027 and push the bulk of nearline exabytes into 2028. What is new is the pull beyond that. Customers, Mosley said, “are actively seeking to extend planning horizons through 2029 and beyond, which we believe reflects growing confidence in their own long-term infrastructure needs.” That is a different posture from a year ago, when hyperscalers booked storage a couple of quarters out.

Two forward demand sources sit underneath that extension, and neither is fully in the numbers yet. The first is agentic AI. Mosley pointed to the growing use of hard drives to hold the context that AI agents reuse instead of recomputing: “the keyword here is context,” he said, describing why persistent storage grows as agents handle longer, more complex tasks. The second is physical AI. Robots and autonomous vehicles, in Mosley’s framing, are less about the machine than the data: “I think it’s a lot more about the data, the data processing, what kind of learning you’re getting from that,” most of it unstructured video that gets stored, retrained on, and stored again.

Mosley was candid that agentic demand is “still very early days” and that physical AI has barely started to show up in shipments. That honesty is the point. The 2029 planning conversations are not resting on those applications yet.

Why the Margin Can Fund a Long Runway

The mechanism that protects them is the technology transition. Seagate is moving drives from 3 terabytes per disk toward 4 and then 5 on its HAMR-based Mozaic platform, packing more capacity onto each drive without adding units. HAMR products exited fiscal 2026 near 40% of nearline exabyte shipments, and management expects 50% on the newer Mozaic 4 platform by the end of calendar 2026. Holding drive count flat while lifting exabytes lowers cost per terabyte, which is how the June quarter reached a record 52.7% gross margin and 44.6% operating margin.

When STX fell 5.92% on August 24, the move was mostly a sector event, with Micron and SanDisk both down more than 5% the same day on renewed AI-chip export worries. But it coincided with a research note rating Seagate a sell at a $378 fair value, arguing the record margin reflects tight supply and favorable pricing rather than a durable edge.

Each order, they have said, carries a set configuration, exabyte volume, and price, and when demand outruns what the factories can ship, Mosley noted, customers “usually, they’ll pay more than that contract price.” The counterweight is real: a single cloud hyperscaler drove a mid-teens share of fiscal 2026 revenue, per reporting around the print, and the storage complex reprices violently on any supply-glut scare, the fear that drove the 31.86% drawdown from the July 16 high. The same operating leverage that lifted margins 10 points in a year would unwind just as fast if pricing broke.

TIKR’s mid-case scenario, realized at June 2031, points to a target near $3,513, a total return of around 315% over about 4.8 years, or an annualized return near 34%. Two revenue drivers carry it: nearline exabyte growth in the mid-20% range as data-center demand compounds, and continued pricing gains per terabyte while supply stays tight against contracted demand. The case assumes revenue compounding around 21% a year, with net income margin expanding toward roughly 53% as the HAMR mix lifts profitability.

The margin driver is the Mozaic transition toward higher-capacity drives that carry more value per unit while drive count stays flat. The primary risk is the mirror image: the market has always treated this business as cyclical, and a break in AI-storage pricing would compress both margins and the multiple at once.

The upside is that the 2029 planning conversations convert into contracts, and the runway extends another leg. The downside is that AI infrastructure spending peaks before those talks firm up, supply catches demand, and a stock priced for expansion gives the gains back.

On peers, the premium is narrower than the reputation suggests: STX trades near 24 times next-twelve-months earnings against roughly 23 times for Western Digital and 21 times for NetApp, using TIKR’s competitor data.

Conclusion

The near term is already spoken for, so the tell is further out. Watch whether those 2029 planning conversations turn into signed long-term agreements over the next few quarters, because that is what separates a durable runway from a cyclical peak. The nearer checkpoint arrives first: Seagate reports its September quarter in late October, having guided to EPS of $7.30, gross margin above 52.7%, and revenue near $4.1 billion. Hit those and extend the booked horizon, and the gap to the $1,125 target starts to look like a mispricing. Show any softening in contracted pricing, and the bears who called the top get their evidence. The order book buys time; what fills 2029 decides the thesis.
