Aubusson, 26 luglio 2026 – La Cité internationale de la tapisserie di Aubusson ha ideato un modo originale per commemorare l’artista: un monumentale arazzo di nastri lungo 23 metri e alto 2,15, progettato sulla base di un concetto radicalmente nuovo che fonde la tradizione degli arazzi di Aubusson con i principi contemporanei dell’installazione tessile. Si tratta infatti di un’opera che, nelle intenzioni dei suoi artefici, mira a riflettere l’immagine singolarmente innovativa della donna che celebra. La sua creazione pittorica è stata affidata all’artista francese Françoise Pétrovitch, la tessitura è stata realizzata dalla Manufacture Robert Four di Aubusson, mentre il Ministero della Cultura della Repubblica Francese le ha conferito lo status di Commissione artistica pubblica. Viene dunque rinnovata la tradizione degli arazzi commemorativi, lo si fa rendendo contestualmente la visione di un artista contemporaneo attraverso i diversi aspetti della sua vita e della sua opera. Una grande figura della letteratura francese, donna impegnata, i luoghi a essa legati, i suoi rapporti con gli altri creatori, il suo contributo apportato alla letteratura e alla modernità e, financo, la scoperta della serie di arazzi Dame à la licorne.
HOMAGE TO GEORGE SAND
The Cité internationale de la tapisserie in Aubusson presents Homage to George Sand, by Françoise Pétrovitch, from June 9 to September 20 2026. In anticipation of the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of her passing in spring 2026, the Cité internationale de la tapisserie – Aubusson has conceived a way to mark this moment through a Homage to George Sand: a monumental ribbon-tapestry, 23 metres long by 2.15 metres high. Designed according to a radically new concept, blending the tradition of Aubusson tapestry with contemporary principles of textile installation, this work aims to reflect the singularly innovative image of the woman it celebrates. Its pictorial creation was entrusted to French artist Françoise Pétrovitch, and its weaving to the Manufacture Robert Four in Aubusson. The Ministry of Culture has granted it the status of Public Artistic Commission.

In 2020, the Cité internationale de la tapisserie in Aubusson conceived a long-format self-supporting tapestry project, 23 metres long by 2.15 metres high: Homage to George Sand. This long-format tapestry — conceived in the perspective of marking the 150th anniversary of George Sand’s passing in 2026 — makes it possible to renew the tradition of commemorative tapestries while offering a contemporary artist’s vision of the aspects of this great French literary figure’s work and life: the committed woman, Sandian places, her relationships with fellow creators, her contribution to literature and modernity, or the discovery of the Dame à la licorne tapestry series.

This homage to George Sand was entrusted to French artist Françoise Pétrovitch, whose tapestry model was selected from among 5 proposals following an audition by a Jury and after a preliminary open call phase (65 artistic applications had been received by the Cité internationale de la tapisserie).

An inter-departmental (Creuse and Indre) and inter-regional (Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Centre-Val de Loire) project, which became a Public Artistic Commission supported by the Ministry of Culture, it rests on a partnership between the Joint union of the Cité internationale de la tapisserie (Nouvelle-Aquitaine Regional Council, Departmental Council of Creuse, Creuse Grand Sud Community of Communes) with the Departmental Council of Indre, the Centre-Val de Loire Regional Council, the Centre des monuments nationaux (George Sand Estate in Nohant-Vic), and the DRACs of Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Centre-Val de Loire. Thanks to its custom-designed self-supporting structure devised by the artist, the tapestry will resemble an ephemeral moving textile installation, freed from the wall, allowing the viewer to interact with the work in a new way.

This monumental weaving project (50 m2), which unfolds over more than two and a half years, testifies to the Cité internationale de la tapisserie’s capacity to invest in a contemporary creation and offer a singular textile transcription/interpretation of it, combining the expertise of the different players in the field (cartoon maker, dyer, weaver, etc.). In her era, George Sand — because she was a woman and also a creator, a writer, a public and political figure, maintained throughout her life this strange dialogue of rejection and adherence to her historical context, shaping her work in the process. In addition to around a hundred novels, short stories and theatrical works, essays, criticism, and an immense correspondence — all seeking at once to shape the unstable landscape of reality, dreams and imagination of her time — she left us, as a parting gift, the echo and creative breath of a free being, resolute in living and embracing all her complexities and multiplicities. CRAFTSMANSHIP AND METHODOLOGY
It stands as a flagship illustration of the craftsmanship and methodology in the preparation and production of contemporary works that the Cité internationale de la tapisserie has been developing since 2010 — whether through the building of a contemporary collection based on collaborations with artists (open calls, sponsored commissions, delegated editioning, the «Carré d’Aubusson» collection), or through the realisation of great woven ventures (tapestry series «Aubusson weaves Tolkien» and «The Imagination of Hayao Miyazaki in Aubusson Tapestry»). A mediation policy, aimed in particular at school audiences, around the various themes of the Homage to George Sand project, has been put in place in close collaboration with the Departmental Councils of Indre and Creuse.

ABOUT CITÉ INTERNATIONALE DE LA TAPISSERIE
For the past 15 years, the Cité internationale de la tapisserie in Aubusson has been dedicated to gaining recognition for, passing on, and promoting the expertise associated with Aubusson tapestry. More than just a museum (holding the “Musée de France” designation), it is a unique institution that sits at the intersection of culture, arts outreach, training, and economic development. The second phase of its development also incorporates a high-level professional hub, featuring a weaving preparation platform, technical workshops, artist residencies, and immersive stays designed for professionals and knowledgeable enthusiasts. The “Lab. des savoir-faire de la tapisserie d’Aubusson” (Aubusson Tapestry Craftsmanship Lab), located right next to the Cité, is set to open in late 2026 within a renovated industrial building. The Cité plays a pivotal role in the regional tapestry ecosystem, working in conjunction with the spinning mills, dye works, cartoon designers, manufacturers, and textile art studios of the Aubusson-Felletin area. It also houses a vocational training center (run by Greta du Limousin), the André Chandernagor Arts Library and Resource Center, three weaving workshops, and a re-weaving workshop belonging to the Mobilier National.
