What Happened?

Shopify stock jumped about 12% on Monday, closing near $127 per share, as investors leaned toward the view that merchants will still need Shopify’s checkout, payments, inventory, and order-management systems even as AI makes creating online stores easier.

Shopify stock rose after RBC Capital argued that free alternatives are unlikely to replace the company’s broader commerce platform, easing recent concerns about competitive disruption. Shopify competes with WooCommerce, Wix, and BigCommerce for merchants building online stores, while Meta represents a newer threat through AI-powered storefront, advertising, payments, and customer-management tools. Shopify’s 34% Q1 revenue growth compared with BigCommerce parent Commerce’s 5% increase to $86.8 million, highlighting Shopify’s greater scale and capacity to invest in AI, payments, and enterprise products. RBC emphasized that Shopify’s breadth, reliability, scale, and integrations remain difficult for free tools to reproduce, helping support Monday’s rebound.

Other analyst actions showed why the AI debate remains unresolved. Morgan Stanley rated Shopify Overweight with a $192 price target and described the company as critical e-commerce infrastructure, while Rothschild & Co Redburn downgraded the stock from Buy to Neutral and cut its target from $160 to $130. Redburn argued that Meta could use AI to help small businesses create storefronts, run advertising, process payments, and manage customer relationships, potentially overlapping with several Shopify services. Unlike traditional commerce-platform rivals, Meta could combine those tools with its large social-media audience and advertising network, creating a different form of competitive pressure.

Shopify’s latest results support the more constructive side of the debate. The company reported Q1 gross merchandise volume, which represents the total value sold by its merchants, of $101 billion, up 35%, while revenue increased 34% to $3.2 billion and free cash flow reached $476 million, representing a 15% margin. President Harley Finkelstein called the quarter “commerce at a truly vast scale,” as Shopify Payments volume rose 41% to $67 billion, B2B GMV increased 80%, and international GMV grew 45%. AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores increased 8x and orders from AI searches rose nearly 13x, while the company’s August 5 results will test whether that momentum continued into Q2.

Is Shopify Stock Fairly Valued?

Under valuation assumptions, the stock is modeled using:

  • Revenue Growth (CAGR): Around 26%
  • Operating Margins: Around 20%
  • Exit P/E Multiple: Around 39x

The 26% annual revenue-growth assumption is close to Shopify’s forward two-year consensus rate, but maintaining that pace through 2028 requires more than continued expansion in monthly store subscriptions.

Merchant Solutions must remain the main growth engine as more sales pass through Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, cross-border tools, financing products, and other transaction-based services. Shopify Payments processed $67 billion in Q1, equal to 67% of total GMV, showing how deeper adoption can increase revenue from existing merchant activity without relying entirely on new customer additions.

The 20% operating-margin assumption requires revenue and gross profit to grow faster than spending on AI infrastructure, international expansion, enterprise sales, and merchant financial services. Management expects operating expenses to decline from 37% of revenue in Q1 to between 35% and 36% in Q2, providing an early test of whether Shopify can turn rapid transaction growth into stronger profitability.

The 39x exit P/E assumes meaningful valuation compression from Shopify’s current forward multiple of around 60x and its one-year historical level of around 80x. Even after that decline, the model still gives Shopify a substantial premium for its growth, payments ecosystem, and position in AI-enabled commerce.

Shopify Free Cash Flow and Analyst Estimates Through 2030

The free cash flow chart supports the broader operating-leverage case, with consensus estimates rising from about $2 billion in 2025 to around $2.6 billion in 2026, $3.4 billion in 2027, and $4.9 billion in 2028. These remain forecasts rather than guaranteed outcomes, and reaching them requires Shopify to preserve cash generation while funding Sidekick, international growth, payments expansion, and larger enterprise deployments.

Based on these assumptions, the model estimates Shopify stock could reach around $148 by the end of 2028, implying around 16% upside from approximately $127. The target is a late-2028 model output rather than a 2026 price forecast, and the limited potential return after Monday’s rally suggests Shopify appears fairly valued rather than clearly undervalued.

Over the next 12 months, continued GMV growth could lift Merchant Solutions revenue as more transactions flow through Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, lending, and cross-border services. Greater payments penetration would increase the revenue Shopify earns from existing merchant sales, although transaction and credit losses must remain controlled for that growth to improve profitability. Sidekick and Shopify’s integrations with AI shopping channels could deepen merchant retention by helping businesses create stores, automate tasks, run campaigns, and reach new buyers from one platform. Enterprise, international, physical-retail, and B2B expansion could add larger merchants that generate higher transaction volumes and adopt more Shopify services.

At around $127, Shopify stock appears fairly valued, with stronger returns requiring revenue growth near 26% and evidence that payments adoption, AI commerce, and operating leverage can move margins toward 20%.
